New York Lakeside Wedding
When it boils right down to it, weddings are about joining together families. Nan’s whole vision for her wedding revolved around family. From the wedding location, Nan’s family cottage in New York on Lake Ontario, to the wedding attendants, friends, and family from all over the country, the overarching theme of family was ever present. Nan said “The lake means a lot to my family. It’s where we grew up going every summer so it made the day that much more special”. It was a special day indeed.
The wedding took place over Memorial Day weekend near Chamount, New York with beautiful Lake Ontario as the backdrop. The morning of the big day was very relaxed, very lowkey. Nan and her bridesmaids prepared at a local resort while John and his groomsmen tossed a frisbee around and got ready inside a lakeside cottage.
From the beautiful ceremony to the fun, energetic reception, the feeling of family was in the air. Nan emphasized before her big day that she wanted to capture moments with her friends and family, not just wedding party shots. We took beautiful pictures of Nan and John with the lake in the background, then focused on candid group pictures throughout the reception. After seeing her photos, Nan said “I liked that a lot of the photos you took weren’t posed. We had the normal posed photos, but the candid shots were my favorites”. The candids captured the closeness of Nan and John and their guests perfectly.
Dealing with wedding details when out of the state
“Because the wedding was so far from where I live I couldn’t worry about the details until I got up there and by the time I got up there most of it was done or was being taken care of”, Nan reflected of her wedding preparations. She delegated a lot of the planning to her sister, who lives close to the wedding location. The Pink Bride offers up some tips and tricks for brides planning a wedding in a different location than they reside; from creating a timeline for the week of the wedding so you know exactly what needs to get done when to arriving at the destination days in advance, planning your perfect day from miles (or states) away doesn’t have to be stressful.
Nan, who considers herself an organizer, was pleasantly surprised with how relaxed everything was the day of the wedding. She had been preparing herself to accept if not everything went as planned- but everything went exactly as planned, every bride’s dream!
Wedding planning tips
She offered up some solid advice for brides thinking through the details of their wedding: “Plan a wedding that you will have fun at. A lot of weddings are done because the families want a wedding and as the bride, you feel like you need to do kind of what your parents want. My recommendation is to take what they want into account but when it comes to the actual day, plan a day you want because it’s not going to be as fun if you try to plan a day for everyone else. It’s your day, as the bride, make it YOUR day.”
Nan and John’s day was filled with family, fun, and beautiful lake views. Laughter was in the air the whole reception, Nan and John took hundreds of pictures with their loved ones, and their wedding was seamless and beautiful. The union of these two families at a location that means so much to Nan made the day even more special.
