Portrait photography is all about communication, understanding and collaboration.
For me, knowing what a person’s expectations are, where they intend to display their portrait photographs, and what they want to say with their images are all key to ensuring a portrait session is successful.
The way a child interacts with their mom. How a father holds his daughter on his shoulders. Witnessing a child explore his surroundings with nothing more than a stick and a head full of curiosity. These aren’t those “smile and look at the camera” moments. These are real. These are timeless. The images capture a story of who we are in the moment that shutter is clicked. These moments are fleeting.
It’s all too easy to point a camera and get an image. It’s a whole other process to capture a moment in a portrait that tells a story or catches those nuances that highlight a relationship.
My photojournalism experience has taught me understanding people and astute observation helps in obtaining those storytelling moments.
Go beyond the snapshot that shows nothing more than you looking at a camera. Have a portrait photograph that highlights who you are as an individual, a couple or as a family.
